History of professionalisation in adult education: national and international perspectives (2008-2009)

‘History of professionalisation in adult education: national and international perspectives’ is a project of the University Alliance Metropolis Ruhr (www.uamr.de/index_en.htm). This is a virtual campus of the three universities of the Ruhr area, which offers lectures and seminars for the students of all three universities (www.ruhrcampusonline.de/).
The seminar ‘History of professionalisation in adult education: national and international perspectives’ was developed by the chair of adult education at the University of Duisburg-Essen. It was offered for the first time in February 2009.

The blended-learning seminar focused on the recent history of professionalisation in adult education (since the 1950s). After a short summary of the history of adult education, specific topics were introduced. These were ‘introductory seminars for adult educators’, ‘professional descriptions for adult educators’ and ‘networking and associations for adult education’. The seminar used original resources and interviews which were gathered within a research project of the German Institute for Adult Education. For international embedding, video resources including interviews with international experts were used. Thereby it was possible to reflect on the topics from an international perspective.
